Florida Chapter of PWWA Forms, Delivers Letter Urging Florida Gubernatorial Candidate Charlie Crist to be Honest about His Sexuality

WASHINGTON, November 3 - Proud of Who We Are will officially open its Florida Chapter today when gay rights activist and president of PWWA-FL Kyle DeVries delivers a letter urging Charlie Crist to be honest with Floridians about his sexuality and his relationship with convicted felon and former Katherine Harris staffer Bruce Jordan.

The letter comes after video footage of a sworn statement in which Dee Dee Hall, who befriended Jordan through Harris’s campaign, reveals that Jordan confided in her that he had an ongoing romantic relationship with Charlie Crist.

Hall had first approached Jordan, whom she knew was gay, intending to set him up with a friend. “He said that he was involved with Charlie. I was like, 'OK.' He just stated his first name. He said, 'Maybe you've heard of him.' He said Charlie Crist."

Just days ago The Broward-Palm Beach New Times released a story about Jason Wetherington, a young up-and-coming Republican star who boasted at two separate parties that he had sex with Crist. According to a reliable source, Wetherington, who recently worked as the field director for Katherine Harris’ campaign, had spoken to several people at a party in Broward County this August about his sexual relationship with Crist. Wetherington also named Crist’s long-term partner: Bruce Jordan.

Jordan appeared in the media in August after it was discovered that the recently released felon was working as a travel aide for Katherine Harris’ Senatorial campaign. Crist, when asked in August by the Miami Herald about Jordan, replied “I don't know who Bruce Jordan is. It doesn't mean I haven't met him. I don't know who you are speaking about.” Crist was later asked by New Times reporter Bob Norman if he had previously had sex with Jordan. “No, I don’t recall the name,” he said.

However, Bruce Jordan’s father Albert Jordan says that Crist and Jordan are friends. “He talks about [Crist], but I don't think he's seen Charlie in a while,” said Albert Jordan. In addition, the sworn testimony in the video released yesterday seems to indicate that Crist and Jordan have had a romantic relationship for some time.

Dee Dee Hall’s boyfriend, Jay Vass, also confirmed that he knew about Crist and Jordan’s intimate relationship. “It’s true,” he said.

Vass, a pilot for the Harris campaign, is a registered Republican and is considered known within Republican political circles. “I couldn't believe they were so open about it,” says Vass. When he asked Jordan if he was worried about it coming out Jordan responded, “It will come out sooner or later, and just as long as long as it comes out after the election, I don't care.”

In an effort to raise awareness about the issue, Kyle DeVries has teamed up with gay rights activist blogger Mike Rogers to form a Florida Chapter of Proud of Who We Are.

“We can’t just stand by and let hypocrisy go unchecked. It’s time for Florida to challenge Crist to be honest about his sexuality and his relationship with Bruce Jordan,” said DeVries, who has worked on Florida Safe Schools and Fair Adoption legislation in the past.

Crist opposes gay marriage and opposes lifting the ban on gay adoption in Florida, which is the only state with such a ban. He has also been heard using his opposition to gay marriage as a central argument while making phone calls for support.

“If what the videotaped statement seems to indicate is true then Crist is not merely a hypocrite, he’s also lying to millions of socially conservative voters who are adamantly opposed to the ‘homosexual lifestyle’,” DeVries said.

DeVries will hand-deliver the letter to Charlie Crist’s campaign headquarters and Attorney General office by hand at 11am today.
